Went to a Scotch tasting session last night…Organized by Johnnie Walker at the Taj West End…

Sounds grand na !!

Well thats what i thought it would be when i first got the invite…

Well, landed there in a black t-shirt, black jeans and black sneakers :)…was slightly unsure about the dress code( what with my friends dressed formally), but WTF, this is bangalore and i wasn’t about the wear formals on a saturday night…the geeks shall rule the world 🙂

Anyways, the guys let me in without so much as a raised eyebrow …guess they are too used to seeing overweight firangs dressed in their customary shorts and t-shirts…

A flash presentation was on when i entered…Me late latif somehow groped my way to a seat…

Once the lights came on, i was glad i hadnt bothered to ‘Dress up’….

Now most 5-star hotes have amazing atriums and lobbies, and the external architecture is pretty cool too…BUT when it comes to conferece rooms…they are way to square and boring.

This once went one step ahead..It was also named the “Conference Room”…hahha…

It had rows and rows of chairs….and patiently listening to the emcee were about …hmmm 30 guys…

Yep, almost all of the same demographics and most probably working in the IT industry…I almost felt like i was attending a lecture…the only difference was that there were 5 tiny glasses of scotch in front of me…4 single malts and ofcourse…Johnnie Walker’s Black Label…

Quite an edutaining experience…learnt that drinks have ‘legs’…and the the stronger they form, the harder is the ‘kick’ you get from them…and they also have character, aroma, palate, colour etc etc…

the fine nuances of single malts and blended scotch …the difference between grain and malt whisky…the fact that the average of each malt in Johnnie Walker is atleast 12 years…blah blah …were well presented by the emcee…who apparently has the best job in this country…He gets paid to drink…

Some interesting tidbits…More scotch is drunk in india then produced in Scotland annually( and Scotland’s the only place where scotch is produced)…it comes in a variety of flavours..Earthy smoke, fresh fruits, rich fruits, chocoate, vanilla….Each individual reacts differently to a whisky and its very possible that you may get a drift of “Wet shoes” while i get the fragrance of “Dark bitter chocolate” from the same drink….the smallest distillery in Scotland produces 17000 liters of scotch per hour…yes, per hour 🙂

And for all tipplers who might be worried that we might run out of scotch, the current makers of scotch claim that if all distilleries were shut down today, there still will be enough scotch to last us for the next 74 years…

Though the malts were good …am not sure if i will convert to scotch..Used to be a whisky drinker but now beer and vodka rule the roost…

And though this may sound jingoistic, the largest distillery in Scotland flies the indian flag…thanks our own vijay…Vijay Mallya 😉

cheers !
